This morning I took a shower. I mention that because I do a lot of idea-type thinking there. In fact, a lot of my ideas for online business-related stuff have come from the few minutes I spent showering.
Today, another thought came to me and I wanted to write about it here.
In Subscription Mastermind, I mention that ‘given the right audience, the right medium, and the right message, you can create a truly profitble online business from an email subscription.”
I thought about that and then I thought about the potentially endless possibilities for email subscriptions: from teaching someone how you planted your garden, or how you made vegan breakfasts for the entire week, to how you scored well on a really difficult exam.
Pat Flynn of SmartPassiveIncome.com
Pat Flynn is one of my online heroes partly because his story is so inspiring. As a young architect-in-training busily rising through the ranks at his firm, Pat looked for a way to add more value to his employer and decided to sit for the LEED-AP exam. If you’re not familiar with LEED, it’s a certification in sustainable design and construction methods.
Pat studied for the exam, passed it, all the while making notes on his study process. Then in 2008, he was laid-off after an economic downturn that affected his firm. Not long before getting laid off, Pat created a simple website where he hosted a simple ebook (the right medium) of his notes for the LEED exam (the right message).
Other who were looking for LEED exam study guides (the right audience) started buying it like crazy; This one little product started Pat down the path of online entrepreneurship and today Pat makes much more money from his online ventures than he ever could’ve as an architect.
As Pat puts it, the best part of his Plan B career is this:
“My family is the primary motivation for everything that I do, and you’ll hear me mention them often throughout the site. My wife, April, and I have two kids—a boy, Keoni, and a girl, Kailani, as well as our dog, Gizmo. The best part about my job is that it allows me to plan my day around my family, not around my business.”
Nothing happens in a vacuum
Pat’s story is proof that almost anything is possible if you have the drive to make things happen, stay open to learning about your craft, and just start taking action.
Pat taught people what he knew. And if you think about it, he wasn’t a recognized authority on the LEED exam. He simply packaged what he knew based on the notes he’d taken preparing for the exam. He saw a perceived need and provided a solution and it worked.
What could you package?
The concept behind Subscription Mastermind is that you know something… probably many things… that you could turn into an email-based course that would help others solve a painful problem.
You don’t even have to leave your 9-5 because email subscriptions are the perfect solution for a non-time-consuming side hustle business that could bring in lots of extra money.
Why not get started today? If you haven’t considered my resource guide, Subscription Mastermind, you should. 🙂
