So did you hear about the teacher who received a $1 million performance bonus? Yeah, neither did I. In fact, there’s never been a teacher who’s received a performance bonus that even comes close to that, if they ever received one at all.
Why teachers teach
We know it isn’t for the money. It’s not just for getting the summers off (not all teachers do) or for the benefits or for the retirement plan.
Every parent whose child has benefited from an underpaid, hard-working, selfless, and devoted teacher owes them much more than simply a thank-you.
We who have been educated by caring, dedicated teachers, also owe them a huge debt of gratitude.
I think we owe them far more than that. We owe them our gratitude, our respect, and our help.
I’ve been thinking about what I can do to help
I have a history with teachers, both as a parent to four children and also as friends. My sweetheart is an elementary school teacher who’s been teaching for over 30 years. I’ve also known other teachers via long-term friendships, and I was a teacher myself at the college level.
I’ve seen them spend their own money for items they needed in the classroom for which there was no budget. I’ve watched as they graded papers after dinner knowing it was on their own time.
After thinking about this for a bit, I’ve decided to create a test group for teachers via a coaching relationship…at no cost to them. I’m convinced that not only are teachers worthy of some help, but that by doing so, they can position themselves to help more people while still maintaining their teaching positions.

I’m looking for a small group of 5-10 teachers who truly want to learn how an email subscription could supplement their incomes & I’ll do it for free.
I’ve been thinking that teachers are possibly the best candidates for creating and running a part-time email subscription. In fact, if I could sit down (in person or virtually) with a small group of 5-10 teachers who truly want to learn how an email subscription could supplement their incomes, I’d do it at no cost to see how it might work for them. It’s something I’m going to arrange and am open to any of you who are teachers to reach out and contact me if you want to be a part of this test group.
Why do I think teachers would be well-suited for an email subscription program?
- Because they know how to communicate better than most, and they know that nothing is achieved in a few days, weeks, or months. In the US, it takes them nine months to teach kids the concepts and skills required to advance to the next grade level. That takes a huge amount of dedication and focus.
- Because they’re hungrier than most. Being a teacher means that you can see the potential in others and in projects that you know are beneficial. It requires no small amount of forward-looking ability and a sense of seeing what’s possible and most importantly, the commitment to stick with the process.
- Because they deserve it. For the reasons I’ve stated above, teachers -more than any other career group I can think of- deserve the rewards that an email subscription program can deliver.
Where do I go from here?
First, I’m going to cross-post this article on Medium and see if between my following there and the blog, I can get a group of teachers interested in working with me at no cost. (Note: There will be an interview to weed out non-teachers, btw.)
Secondly, I’m going to ask you folks who aren’t teachers to forward this post to any teachers that you know. (Thank you in advance for that!) I’m aware that they don’t know me and I’m an unknown person to them. But they have nothing to lose by learning more about this opportunity. So, please…if you care about them, share this post with them.
So, elephant in the room…what’s in it for me?
If you’ve read my about page, you know that I’ve been looking for a way to give back because I’m convinced it’s by giving of ourselves and our talents that we really make a difference in the world. I know I’m on to something here working with teachers who, in my opinion, deserve much more than our society gives them in terms of recognition and financial compensation.
It’s also not about me benefitting financially from this, but about me working with others to expand their ability to improve their lives. That’s what’s in this project for me. That’s always been my mission.
