The Gatekeeper Is Dead

Today’s post is an overview of what publishing looks like today for the Rebel Writer. It’s 2017 and the options for publishing today are as wide open as the ocean. If you’re a writer, especially a Rebel Writer, you’d better get busy because as you’ll see, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be publishing…and getting paid to write.

Book publishing no longer has a gatekeeper

It used to be that writers were at the mercy of several publishing industry professionals: agents, publisher’s representatives, even the lowly slush-pile reader. A ‘no’ response from any of these could almost certainly dash the hopes of even the most thick-skinned among us.

But the gatekeepers is dead. Amazon changed all that. So did Apple iBooks and others, but Amazon gets the credit for leveling the playing field for all.

It’s 2017 and although these professionals still exist, you never have to deal with any of them to publish and sell your writing. Self-publishing, once the bane of writers everywhere, is now considered the mainstream mode of publishing.

Book writers no longer have an excuse

They simply don’t exist any longer. If you’re a writer and you’re still kvetching about the lack of opportunity, you’d better check that comment at the curb.

If you can click, you can publish. With only a few clicks that final draft of your novel that you’ve been too nervous to submit to an agent or publisher can be published and selling on Amazon, Apple iBooks, or on your own website.

Subscriptions are the fastest way to getting paid to write

I’ve been writing posts about this topic for a while. They’re about packaging what you already know into shareable and digestible bite-sized email subscriptions. Subscriptions are a time-tested way to attract readers, get paid to write, and publish what you already know.

Publishing a subscription is actually more lucrative and profitable than publishing and selling a book. Non-fiction books have a limited virtual shelf life on Amazon, but a subscription program, when launched and marketed correctly, can be an evergreen subscription product that sells for months and even years.

Do you still want to sell your book?

Non-fiction sells better than fiction. If you’ve got a non-fiction book that solves a painful problem that a large group of people suffers from, your book can be like ripe fruit just ready to be picked.

No one ever bought a novel to help them solve a problem.

Instead, they bought a non-fiction book that promised a solution to the problem they needed to solve. If you’ve got a problem, chances are good that a lot of other people share your pain. Why not use your skills to write a book that solves the problem?
