Why I Write Blogs Instead of Design Them
Sometimes I’m like a bull in a china shop. I can’t help but knock things over with the slightest, unintentional movement.
Except this time, my movement was anything but unintentional. They were purposeful to be sure, but they lacked any modicum of foresight.
They also make it abundantly clear why I write a blog and don’t go near blog design. Let me explain.
I have an associate and friend, Trisha Cupra, who lives in Australia. Recently she launched a new site built in Wordpress and I’m envious. I love the coffee cup subscribe button, I like the gray-toned subscription areas. She’s even got that Twitter thing going (which I have yet to figure out). But here’s my problem.
Unless these features come with the WordPress Theme, I’ve absolutely no clue as to how to insert them. My knowledge of CSS, CIA, FBI, etc., is nill. And to illustrate this lack of savvy, I offer the following experience.
Last night, after a particularly rough day at work, I came home to de-stress by blogging a bit. I went to my hosting site and decided to pull down two former blog sites associated with the two book I’ve written: The sites are Becoming Irresistible and ProCaseStudies. Since I don’t post to either any longer (and I’m thinking of hosting some new domains), I decided to pull them down to make room for the new ones in my account.
So I rapidly pulled them down.
Then I realized the impact of what I’d done. You see, most of the pictures on this site (all the ones located on this page) are actually still hosted on the other domains. So, when I pulled down my PCS site, I effectively eliminated all the pictures on this blog.
Now, any web designer worth her salt would tell you (I would assume) that what I’ve done in the way of referencing photos on another site) isn’t exactly foolproof and is fraught with the danger of deleting current material should anything happen to the storage site. Yeah, thanks for that.
Then I, just as rapidly, put them up again and now all my pictures are back. I guess I’ll leave the other sites up until I can download and store the photos into this blog’s storage area. Learned a valuable lesson: Leave the design and design-oriented thinking to the pros and stick with pounding the keys.
